PERCEPCJE in Photography: Three Editions at Galeria Saska
For three editions, PERCEPCJE. New Forms of Art has brought together theatre and performance projects exploring how new technologies can reshape the ways performances are created, experienced and shared. At the heart of the programme is a question that has become increasingly relevant in the age of AI: how might emerging technologies open up new forms of artistic practice, while transforming the experience of the audience?
Across the three editions, artists have worked with artificial intelligence, virtual reality, new media, digital projection and interactive formats, testing not only what these technologies can do, but also how they can alter the relationship between performer, artwork and audience.
These explorations are now brought into the public space through an exhibition of photographs at Galeria Saska in Lublin. The exhibition brings together photographic documentation from performances presented across all three editions of PERCEPCJE.
Three Editions, Multiple Directions of Exploration
From its beginning, PERCEPCJE. New Forms of Art has been a space for experimentation with contemporary theatre and performance. Rather than treating technology simply as a technical resource, the projects presented within the programme have approached it as part of the artistic process, the structure of the performance and the way an audience encounters the work.
The third edition expanded these explorations through a range of different approaches to AI, digital environments and audience participation.
“LUMO: Babel Tower”, this year’s premiere, explores language and communication through digital environments and remote collaboration, bringing together actors working from several countries at the same time.
“Ona NIZM” by Maciej Śliwiński turns to online theatre and live streaming to examine the digital image of the self, pressure, surveillance and the responsibility of the viewer.
In “The Oracle,” AI becomes a means of exploring the relationship between humans and technology. The work raises questions about a future in which the boundaries between the human and the non-human are becoming increasingly uncertain.
“AREYOUARE” introduces domestic robots into a performative setting, while “Trofeum” turns towards the body, memory and the traces that experience leaves behind.
Three Editions Through the Lens of Photography
At Galeria Saska, photographs from different stages in the development of PERCEPCJE are brought together in a single visual narrative.
The exhibition offers a chance to encounter works whose forms frequently moved beyond the conventions of traditional theatre. Audiences entered immersive environments, experienced VR, encountered performances through live transmission and digital imagery, and in some cases became part of the work itself.
Photography preserves moments that existed within these temporary artistic situations. Placed alongside one another, the images form a visual record of three editions of PERCEPCJE, revealing the diversity of approaches pursued by the artists and tracing the evolution of the programme under the curatorial direction of Barbara Żarinow.
From Performance to Public Space
The exhibition takes place at Galeria Saska, run by the ROZDROŻA Centre for Intercultural Creative Initiatives and directed by Piotr Franaszek. Located in the public space along the fence of the Saxon Garden on Aleje Racławickie, the gallery brings contemporary art into the everyday movement of the city.
Here, the photographs are encountered outside the familiar setting of a gallery interior. Passers-by see the images as they move through the city, while documentation originally created to preserve moments from theatrical performances takes on a new spatial and social context.
Galeria Saska has previously presented photography connected with theatre. In 2026, its programme under the care of ROZDROŻA opened with “Traces – Leszek Mądzik’s Scena Plastyczna in the Photography of Stefan Ciechan,” an exhibition devoted to photographic documentation of performances by Scena Plastyczna at the Catholic University of Lublin.
